Slick trick

Post by Bernie in MA » Sun Sep 30, 2007 6:26 pm

I needed to put a bolt thru a gear housing hole. It was a 1"x3/8 carriage bolt. The hole was about 18" down in the side of the gear case with slightly over an inch space beside the sprocket next to the hole. I welded a piece of 3/8 square rod to the edge of the bolt head making sure the bolt shoulders were aligned correctly. The bolt slipped in like a charm. I tightened the nut and broke the rod off. It was my machinst friend's idea.

Good idea! Hope I can remember that when that situation comes up for me.

I've also used a piece of dowel and a dab of grease in similar situations, but that's limited to small, lightweight fasteners.
