New habit (Bad or Good or just Ugly)

Postby Dieselrider » Fri Apr 13, 2018 6:28 am

Ben playing with an old Craftsman Wood Lathe that i inherited from my dad years ago. Up until recently it sat around gathering dust and getting used as a junk drop site for whatever. odd scraps of lumber or whatever. i have started using it and playing around to see just what I can do on it. Here are a couple things that are trivial finished parts.

Small red oak bowl

Couple wine bottle toppers. One out of some kind of pine and one from oak.

Have roughed out a couple other bowls. Would like to do more bowls and such but, the old lathe is not really built for anything of much size.

Just so you know I haven't straed too far from steel: Made this little mandrel to turn wine bottle tops on.

Sorry. not sure what the phone camera was trying to focus on in the last one.

Nice. Pix are pretty small, any chance of bigger ones for my tired old eyes?
What do you mean I can't do that?

I tried bigger ones and they were rejected as too big. Need to find a happy medium.

Few more.

Finish on most are boiled linseed oil and CA glue. The last one on the left in the photo is linseed oil and bees wax.

Linseed oil and CA glue? Interesting combination, how does that work?

The linseed oil is applied first and leaves a shine. Then the CA glue is applied over the oil. It leaves a kind of shell over the oil when dried. Seems to work good. That glue stinks though. Would not want to use in tight spaces for long term.

How is the glue applied? What type/brand of glue do you use? Seems like it would take quite a bit.

You talkin the CA glue? So far most of what I have turned is segmented pieces glued together as I don't have much here large enough to not proceed that way. There I am using tight bond 3 and it works well.

The CA glue is just super glue and I use the same paper towel I use for the linseed oil to apply it. Just put a few drops on the paper towel and apply it to the piece. Have to work quick as it dries fast. Also can stick to your fingers if it soaks through the paper towel. Something else about the super glue that I diddn't know before is that it comes in 3 different thicknesses. Thin for using on the finish and where you want it to run a bit before it sets up, medium which I don't know yet where you would use that and thick which can be used to help fill voids and cracks in the wood. Some guys will mix some with saw dust or other fillers to fill voids in the wood. Others use resins for the same purpose. Type is this from Penn State Industries.

Right, the CA glue. The stuff I've used would be a bitch to get applied before it cures.

I don't do a lot of wood turning, but I might have to dream up a project just to check that out.
